The Community Water Center (CWC) acts as a catalyst for community-driven water solutions through organizing, education, and advocacy. We seek to build and enhance leadership capacity and local community power around water issues, create a regional movement for water justice in the San Joaquin Valley, and enable every community to access safe, clean, and affordable drinking water.
Community Outreach Canvasser:
Community Water Center is launching a campaign to engage thousands of voters in Tulare County this fall to ensure safe and affordable drinking water for all. We are looking for motivated individuals who desire to help transform their community and region. This is a 10-16 day campaign from mid-May to early June. The team will work five days per week (tentatively Wednesday through Friday from 3:30pm-8:30pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, when the team will work from 11:00am to 4:00pm). The days worked are generally Wednesdays through Sundays, at the times noted above. Hours and days may change depending on candidate’s availability and learned best practices.
The Community Outreach Canvasser position will be primarily responsible for contacting thousands of voters through daily phone banking and door-to-door canvassing to potential voters. The Community Outreach Canvasser will report directly to the Community Education and Engagement Manager.
The campaign is designed to talk on the phone and face-to-face with voters to identify supportive voters and build support for campaigns that would ensure safe, affordable drinking water for all. The Canvasser will gain excellent experience in grassroots organizing and voter engagement.
- Reach voters through phone banking and door-to-door canvassing to educate them about critical issues affecting their drinking water and opportunities to engage in campaigns for safe, affordable water;
- Attend team meetings to set daily goals and attend team debriefs to report results;
- Ensure all data is submitted in a timely fashion and submit daily reports with activity reports;
- Reach daily and weekly benchmark goals for number of voters contacted and supporters identified.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Strong passion for and commitment to social and environmental justice.
- Outgoing, excellent interpersonal skills and comfortable approaching people in public places.
- Ability to motivate voters around CWC’s vision for change.
- Ability to effectively engage residents through door-to-door canvassing efforts and calls.
- Ability to track and report results and data as required.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and take initiative.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
- Ability to accept praise and critical feedback – the ideal candidate would value self-improvement and seek evaluation.
- Flexible schedule and ability to work evenings, tentatively, Wednesday through Friday (approximately 3:30-8:30 pm) and Saturday and Sunday afternoons (approximately 11:00 am to 4:00 pm).
- Comfortable with talking to voters, walking neighborhoods and knocking on doors to talk about voting.
- Punctual, well organized, self-motivated, and energetic.
- Fluent in English and Spanish with strong communication skills and ability to connect with diverse people.
- Previous canvassing experience.
- California driver's license, valid insurance, safe driving record, and regular access to a 4-5 seat passenger car.
Starting Date: Mid-May 2018
Training: You will receive training from the Community Education and Engagement Manager, beginning with an orientation and will be given all the tools needed to succeed.
