Mayra is originally from Merced, CA, and moved to Santa Cruz, CA to pursue a higher education. She graduated from UC Santa Cruz in August 2018 with a BA in Anthropology. Mayra believes that food is a big part of all cultures and not enough attention is given to commodity chains, especially in communities of color and low-income communities, where people face many injustices. Mayra's research in commodity chains sparked her interest in social and environmental justice. Besides her anthropological background, most of her past experience is in education, where she has worked and volunteered in several K-12 schools (in low income communities) for more than seven years.
