November/December eNews: United for Water Justice Across California

Para español, haz clic aqui

Dear Supporter,

Community members living near Walnut Avenue, just outside of Greenfield, deal with nitrate and 123-TCP contamination daily in their drinking water, and they know this is unacceptable. They know that united, they can better organize to work with the City of Greenfield for long-term drinking water solutions.

Community partners discuss organizing as a CBO during a CWC Platica.

Residents came together to form a Community-Based Organization (CBO) — Committee for Clean, Safe, and Affordable Drinking Water in Greenfield / El Comité para tener Agua Sana, Limpia, y Económica en Greenfield. While this project is only beginning, we are excited for the strong energy and commitment residents are showing. CWC and the new CBO will work together to push for safe and affordable water!

Adelante,

Susana De Anda

Co-Founder and Executive Director

Voters Hear From Local Candidates

Joe Soria speaking with a community member at the forum.

November closed off with a nonpartisan Tulare County Candidate Forum co-hosted by Central Valley United for Power and CWC in Visalia. Tulare County voters heard from:

  • Benny Corona, Tulare County District Two

  • Joe Soria, Tulare County District One

  • Larry Mercari, Tulare County District One

  • Angel Ruiz, California State Assembly District 33

Community partners listened to candidate positions on groundwater management, LGTBQ+ protections, and women’s healthcare among other issues. These forums provide a crucial space not only for candidates to share their platforms but for voters to ask about issues important to them. True community engagement happens when voters are able to speak directly with candidates and voice their concerns. All candidates will be on the ballot in Tulare County for the March 5, 2024 Primary Election.

Community Resources

Low-income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP)

California received $116 million in one-time funding through this program to cancel out outstanding water and wastewater debt. Recently, this program expanded to allow qualified residents to receive one-time payments even if they are current on their water bill!

If you are struggling with water or wastewater affordability, or know someone who is, the first step is to contact your water district to ask about this program. Click here for more information or call us at (559) 733-0219.

California Flood Relief Program

In response to spring flooding, California created a $95 million state-funded storm recovery program to provide support to eligible individuals impacted by the storms who cannot access federal assistance due to immigration status. This includes direct assistance payments for housing, food, and transportation costs. Resources will be available through May 2024 or until all funds are spent. Click here for more information!
