September eNews: Safe Water Funding Secured through 2045!

Dear Supporter,
Last month, the Supreme Court issued a deeply troubling ruling that effectively sanctions racial profiling by immigration agents. This decision gives legal cover for targeting individuals based on their assumed race or ethnicity, speaking English with an accent or speaking Spanish, being present in specific locations such as farms or day labor pickup sites, or the type of work they do.
This ruling paves the way for increased harassment of Latino, immigrant, and other nonwhite communities. This is not the America we believe in.
At Community Water Center (CWC), we work hand in hand with immigrant communities across California. Our mission is rooted in the belief that safe, clean, and affordable drinking water is a human right—a right that must be protected regardless of race, income, or immigration status. We know that water justice is inseparable from social justice.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with our partners and allies who are fighting back against these attacks on immigrant communities. In this dangerous moment, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that all community members feel safe, valued, and empowered—whether they’re attending a local meeting or speaking out at the Capitol in Sacramento.
As a grassroots organization, our work goes beyond water. It’s about dignity. It’s about justice. And it’s about creating a world where the most vulnerable among us are protected—not targeted. We will continue to share resources, listen to our communities, and shape our advocacy to meet their needs—because justice for the most vulnerable strengthens us all.
Now more than ever, we must stand together to protect our shared humanity.
Adelante,

SAFER is Safe!
CWC staff and community partners at the State Capitol advocating for SAFER in August.
The SAFER program is here to stay through 2045! Governor Gavin Newsom renewed California’s Cap & Trade program which includes funding for the SAFER program. This deal secured $130 million annually through 2045 to fund safe drinking water projects for California. Community leader in the Central Coast and SAFER Advisory Group member, Silverio Perez, described the continuation of SAFER as, “...a hope for communities who are still facing drinking water problems and are advocating for solutions.”
Before this deal was reached, funding for SAFER was set to sunset in 2030, but this victory means SAFER and funding for it are now guaranteed for almost 20 years! Some of the hardest safe water projects in our state — in historically underinvested communities — can take years to complete. Knowing we have reliable funding to see those projects through is a huge win. This legislative win was only made possible thanks to a collective effort from staff, EJ allies, and dedicated community partners who spoke to the good work done by SAFER and the need to continue these efforts. Decision makers are ready to listen when communities are informed and active in their advocacy!
We’ll keep working to secure more legislative wins, so keep an eye out for how you can support!
Construction is Happening in the Central Coast!
Construction is taking place for the Springfield project.
Construction is advancing in the El Comité area! Since we celebrated the groundbreaking in Monterey County, construction for the main line is complete on three roads. This milestone means we are one step closer to getting homes connected to clean drinking water. Community partners are being kept up to date on where construction is taking place to make sure everyone is informed on the progress being made.
Homes are set to have clean drinking water by the fall of 2026. Community partners were persistent to secure resources so that they can look forward to turning on the tap in their homes to clean water. The path to the Human Right to Water is achievable and this is a clear example of that!
Stay tuned to eNews for updates as construction moves along!
