Statement on Cesar Chavez Allegations
At Community Water Center, our values center respect and dignity for the communities we work with and beyond. The recent allegations of abuse by Cesar Chavez uncovered in The New York Times’ investigation are both shocking and inexcusable. These actions go against what we stand for in efforts to empower community. We are deeply saddened for those impacted and stand by the victims and their families, applauding the brave women who have stepped forward, refusing to be silenced.
We recognize the farmworker movement has always been connected to the water justice movement and want to reiterate that the actions of one individual do not diminish the legacy of all of the people who have dedicated their lives and sacrificed for the farmworker movement and other social justice movements. We especially want to show our support for a longtime ally in the water justice movement, Dolores Huerta, who is courageously continuing her commitment to workers’ rights and women’s rights.
It is a time to reflect on legacies and continue centering empowerment for those who need the most support. Mr. Chavez’s actions should not overshadow the power, progress and importance of the farmworker movement. No legacy is above accountability and the work must continue.
